GIOVANNI ROSSO: A Visit to the Heart of Serralunga d’Alba

Some wineries allow us to discover great wines, while others help us understand why a region can express itself in so many different ways in every bottle. Giovanni Rosso belongs to the latter. Located in Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe, this family-run winery has built its identity around Nebbiolo, the great vineyards of Barolo, and a philosophy that places respect for the land at the centre of every wine it produces.

Our visit was an opportunity to discover this approach first-hand. We explored the winery, visited the barrel cellar, learned about its winemaking philosophy and, finally, had the chance to taste its wines, including samples drawn directly from the barrels. It was an experience that brought us closer not only to the wines themselves, but also to the care and sensitivity behind them

A Family History Rooted in Serralunga d’Alba

The story of Giovanni Rosso dates back to 1906, when the family began cultivating vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most emblematic villages in the Barolo appellation. Since then, several generations have maintained a close connection with this land, learning to understand its soils and the unique character of Nebbiolo.

Over the years, the family consolidated its vineyard knowledge and commitment to quality. In the 1980s, Giovanni Rosso undertook a major renewal of the vineyards, with the aim of producing high-quality grapes and better expressing the distinctive characteristics of each plot.

In 2001, Davide Rosso, Giovanni’s son, took over the management of the winery. Combining a contemporary outlook with a deep sensitivity to the land, he has continued the family legacy, paying particular attention to the identity of Serralunga d’Alba’s historic vineyards and how each one is expressed in the wines

A Winery in Harmony with the Landscape

One of the things that struck us most during our visit was the setting. The winery blends naturally into the landscape of the Langhe, a region where hills covered in vineyards are an inseparable part of the area’s identity.

During the tour, we explored the working areas and learned how the winery operates. The explanations of its winemaking philosophy helped us understand the importance of the vineyards, the origin of the grapes and the care taken at every stage of the process

Tasting Wine Straight from the Barrel

One of the most special moments of our visit was the opportunity to taste some of the wines directly from the barrels. This experience allows you to discover the wine as it continues to evolve and appreciate nuances that are still coming together during the ageing process.

During the tasting, we learned how each wine develops over time and how the winemaking decisions are intended to preserve the personality of each vineyard. Hearing these explanations on site helped us better understand the skill and precision behind every bottle.

For those of us who enjoy wine not only for what is in the glass, but also for its origins and how it is made, these moments are particularly valuable. They gave us a glimpse into the winery’s daily work and a deeper understanding of how its wines develop their distinctive identity.

A Tasting to Discover the Character of the Wines

After exploring the winery and tasting some wines directly from the barrels, it was time to sample the finished wines. This was an opportunity to appreciate how Giovanni Rosso’s philosophy is reflected in the glass and how the character of Serralunga d’Alba comes through in its wines.

Nebbiolo lies at the heart of the winery’s identity. In Barolo, this grape variety can produce wines with great structure, aromatic depth and remarkable ageing potential. During the tasting, we discovered different nuances and gained a better understanding of the relationship between the vineyard, the grape variety and the winemaking decisions.

Among the stories that reveal the family’s connection to the land is that of Ester Canale Rosso and Vignarionda, one of Serralunga d’Alba’s historic vineyards. Davide Rosso’s recovery of a plot within this vineyard in 2011 represents the continuation of a family story deeply rooted in the land and the preservation of its viticultural heritage.

This connection between people, vineyards and generations is part of what makes Giovanni Rosso special. Our visit allowed us to discover this not only through the wines, but also through the history and philosophy behind every bottle

A Visit to Remember

Our visit to Giovanni Rosso gave us a closer look at a winery deeply connected to Serralunga d’Alba and the history of great Barolo wines. Touring the winery, tasting wines straight from the barrels and sampling the finished wines made this a special way to discover the region.

We came away with the impression of a winery where family tradition and respect for the vineyards remain central. A highly rewarding visit for anyone who wants to discover the Langhe not only through its landscapes, but also through the wines and the people who bring them to life
