In the heart of Verduno, one of the historic villages of the Barolo region, lies Castello di Verduno, a property that brings together centuries of history, winemaking tradition and hospitality. Housed in an ancient castle, this family-run winery has strong ties to two of Piedmont’s great wine appellations: Barolo and Barbaresco.

During our visit, Fabio showed us around a beautiful winery and introduced us to its history and facilities. Exploring its spaces and learning more about the philosophy behind the estate was the perfect introduction to a tasting of some of its outstanding wines, from Barolo to Barbaresco, without forgetting the distinctive character of Verduno Pelaverga

A History of Castles, Vineyards and Family Tradition

The history of Castello di Verduno is closely linked to an ancient castle whose origins date back to the 16th century. Set in a privileged position in the heart of the Langhe, the building has witnessed the evolution of a region now internationally renowned for the quality and character of its wines.

The Burlotto family acquired the property in 1909. Decades later, in 1953, Giovanni Battista Burlotto ushered in a new chapter by reviving the winemaking activity and dedicating part of the building to welcoming visitors. Since then, the castle has maintained a special relationship with wine and hospitality, combining its historic heritage with the work of a family-run winery.

Today, Castello di Verduno is known for producing wines from two of Piedmont’s great appellations: Barolo and Barbaresco. Its wines reveal the different expressions of Nebbiolo depending on the territory and vineyard of origin. The estate also produces Verduno Pelaverga, a native grape variety that represents a distinctive part of the local winemaking identity

A Visit to the Winery with Fabio

One of the highlights of our visit was exploring the winery with Fabio, who showed us around the facilities and helped us learn more about the history and philosophy of Castello di Verduno.

We found the winery beautiful. The historic character of the property, its spaces and the connection between the building and the winemaking process give the visit a special charm. It is not simply about seeing where the wines are made, but also about discovering how an estate with such a rich history has maintained its connection with Piedmont’s winemaking traditions.

Fabio’s explanations gave us a closer look at the winery’s work and helped us better understand its relationship with the Barolo and Barbaresco territories. It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit that set the scene for one of our favourite moments: sitting down to taste the wines and discover the different expressions of Nebbiolo

A Tasting of Barolo, Barbaresco and Verduno Pelaverga

After exploring the winery and learning more about the history of Castello di Verduno, it was time to sit down and taste the wines. It was a wonderful opportunity to discover how Nebbiolo expresses itself across two of Piedmont’s most important wine territories: Barolo and Barbaresco.

We began with the Barbarescos, tasting Barbaresco Rabajà 2020 and Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva 2019, two wines that reveal the character of this prestigious vineyard. The tasting continued with Barolo 2020, followed by Barolo Monvigliero 2019 and Barolo Monvigliero Riserva 2019. It was fascinating to explore their differences and appreciate how vineyard origin and ageing contribute to each wine’s character.

We also had the opportunity to taste Verduno Pelaverga, a wine that offers a different and particularly distinctive expression of the area. This native grape variety adds another dimension to the work of a winery that not only produces great Nebbiolo wines but also helps preserve Verduno’s viticultural heritage.

The tasting left us with a wonderful impression. Comparing Barolo and Barbaresco during the same visit, alongside the distinctive character of Pelaverga, was an excellent way to appreciate the richness and diversity of Piedmont’s wines

Castello di Verduno: The Charm of a Historic Winery

Our visit to Castello di Verduno was a wonderful experience, both because of the beauty of the estate and the opportunity to discover the winery with Fabio. Learning about its history, exploring its facilities and understanding its connection to the region added a special dimension to the tasting that followed.

The Barolos and Barbarescos allowed us to appreciate the diversity of Nebbiolo and the differences between two of Piedmont’s great appellations. Verduno Pelaverga brought the experience to a close with a distinctive expression deeply rooted in the local identity.

Castello di Verduno is well worth visiting for anyone who wants to explore Piedmont’s wines and discover a historic estate where wine, heritage and hospitality come together
