In the small village of Verduno, in the heart of the Langhe, lies Comm. G.B. Burlotto, one of the historic wineries of the Barolo region. Founded in 1850, its story is closely linked to the winemaking heritage of the area and to the preservation of grape varieties and vineyards that are now central to its identity.

During our visit, Cristina welcomed us warmly and guided us around the winery. Although some areas were undergoing renovation, we were able to explore part of the facilities and, above all, sit down with her to hear the family’s story, look at maps of the Barolo appellation and gain a better understanding of the character of its vineyards and wines

A Family History Rooted in Verduno

The story of Comm. G.B. Burlotto began in 1850, when Giovan Battista Burlotto turned the family business towards wine production. At a time when winemaking in the Langhe was still developing, he championed wines that expressed the character of their land. His reputation grew to the point that the winery became a supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, a distinction that further enhanced its prestige.

The family was also closely involved in preserving Verduno Pelaverga, a local grape variety that came close to disappearing. Ignazio Burlotto continued producing it when very few growers were making it as a distinct wine, helping ensure that it remained part of Verduno’s identity.

Today, the family continues this legacy with a philosophy focused on the origin and individuality of each vineyard. Its best-known wines include Barolos from historic sites such as Monvigliero and Cannubi, alongside other bottlings that showcase the diversity of the Langhe. It is a tradition that does more than preserve the past: it seeks to express each place authentically

Discovering Burlotto with Cristina

One of the highlights of our visit was the warm welcome we received from Cristina, who took the time to explain the family’s history and its approach to winemaking.

Although some areas of the winery were undergoing renovation, we were able to explore part of the facilities and see where the wines are made. Afterwards, we sat down with Cristina for a relaxed conversation, looking at maps of the Barolo appellation and discovering the distinctive characteristics of its vineyards. It was particularly interesting to understand how the location and features of each plot influence the personality of the wines.

Beyond the facilities themselves, what made the visit so special was the combination of history, knowledge of the land and genuine hospitality. It was a chance to discover Burlotto from the inside and understand that behind its exceptional wines lie a family, a strong identity and a deep connection with Verduno.

The Tasting: Discovering Verduno Through Its Wines

After learning about the family’s history and exploring part of the winery, it was time for one of the highlights of our visit: the tasting. Cristina introduced us to the character of Burlotto’s wines, starting with its white and rosĆ© wines before moving on to the world of Barolo.

We also tasted Verduno Pelaverga, a wine that is particularly representative of the area and the winery’s history. Its presence reflects Burlotto’s important role in preserving this local grape variety, which produces a distinctive expression of Verduno

The tasting continued with several Barolos from the 2021 vintage: Barolo, Barolo Acclivi, Barolo Monvigliero and, finally, Barolo Cannubi. It was fascinating to discover the differences between them and appreciate how each vineyard contributes its own personality, even within the same appellation and vintage.

The quality of all the wines was exceptional. We found the combination of elegance, depth and precision that helps explain Burlotto’s outstanding reputation among Barolo enthusiasts. It was a memorable tasting that gave us a deeper understanding of the winery’s identity and the distinctive character of its vineyards

A Visit to Remember

Our visit to Burlotto was a wonderful experience, thanks both to Cristina’s warm hospitality and to the opportunity to learn more about the family’s history and its relationship with Verduno. The conversations about the vineyards, the maps of Barolo and the tour of the winery provided a special context for the tasting that followed.

The 2021 Barolos left an extraordinary impression on us, with a level of quality that confirms the reputation of this historic winery. Burlotto is an essential stop for anyone wishing to understand the richness of Barolo and discover the distinctive character of Verduno through one of its most iconic producers
